6th December - Read Write Inc Workshop

Read, Write Inc. workshop for parents 6th December 2012

Helping your child to read.
Dear Parents/Guardians

Building on the continuing success of the Read, Write Inc programme and the well attended workshops in July and October; we would like to invite you to our latest reading workshop for parents. For those of you that were unable to attend our October session, we would like to provide an opportunity to attend an evening reading workshop in Burnaby Hall on Thursday 6th December from 6.30pm until 7.15pm.

At Walkley we share your desire for reading and writing to be at the centre of your child’s development, and our commitment to this continues with an opportunity for support and guidance on reading with your child at home.

You will be given guidance on do’s and don’ts for reading with your child, including:
·         Helping your child to decode (sound out) words using pure sounds.
·         Recognising words that will be hard to read (can’t be sounded out).
·         Choosing quality storybooks - How to paint a picture with words to enhance comprehension.
·         Where to find resources and support at home.

We believe this will be a really helpful and useful workshop that will arm you with the tools to support the way reading and writing is taught in school through the Read, Write Inc programme.

If you would like more information and advice on phonics before the workshop, visit the parent support website; Oxford Owl at www.oxfordowl.co.uk

Thank you for your comment YF!

Thank you for your comment YF saying "These fireworks are great!" Sorry I could not publish it as it had a person's full name as the author, it must be initials only, if you need any help with this just pop into school and we can show you!

Safety Week

This week has been 'Safety Week' across school. In Key Stage One we have spent each afternoon in a different class in mixed class groups to learn about medicines, stranger danger and bullying. In Bear Class we learnt about bullying and, what it is and what to do if you see this. We designed posters to teach children not to bully and how this might make others feel.

Fireworks!

For our topic this half term 'Celebrations' we started this last week by painting fireworks pictures and learning about Guy Fawkes. Here are a selection of our pictures, can you spot yours?

In maths this week...

we have been learning to use positional language. We used; next to, under, over, around, behind, in front of to describe positions and give instructions using them. Can you describe the photos of children here:
